Gender Differences, part 657
Just noticed over the course of a lifetime, though perhaps just in my narrow experience or my still narrower imagination, a subtle difference in how the shock-driven harrumph is expressed:
Women: Oh my God! My spouse is sleeping with my best friend!
Men: Oh my God! My best friend is sleeping with my spouse!
Discuss.

I apologize for going off topic, but I could find no other way to leave a message for you. I just read your topic "More Brains Equals Less Happiness ..." last night, and discovered that I could not post a comment because the topic was closed. I find your comments to be appalling. I have always appreciated athletic prowess; and I admire those athletes who are genuinely kindhearted, although they seem to be outnumbered by those who are arrogant. When you say that all criticism of school athletes is motivated by envy, you are impugning people's motives. You totally disregard the issue of bullying by jocks. Those who were bullied by jocks in school may be resentful, but they are not envious. You say nerds are jealous of the jock when he gets the pretty girl. Again, you are wrong. When I was in high school, I never wished that I had a shallow social climber for a girlfriend. Pretty on the outside, but ugly inside. If I had been an athlete in high school, I would have avoided such girls like the plague because I would have wanted to be appreciated for who I was, not what I was. You stereotype men who don't like sports as being on the political left. Again, you are wrong. I voted for Senator McCain in the last presidential election and fear the current administration. And President Obama loves to play basketball (nothing wrong with that). So there goes your stereotype. Everyone should respect the accomplishments of everyone else. You say that nerds should have a Jock Appreciation Day, but nowhere do you say that jocks should appreciate nerds for their own accomplishments. Again, a double standard on your part. You also neglect the issue of preferential treatment of athletes, which sometimes is manifested in extreme leniency in the courts. Football players and other athletes are far less likely to be convicted of rape than nonathletic men. I suggest you visit Kathy Redmond's website ( www.ncava.org ) and tell me if she is motivated by envy. You seem to have imbibed of the anti-intellectual component of American culture. One of the greatest heroes of World War II was Raoul Wallenberg, who saved the lives of more than 10,000 Hungarian Jews from the Nazis. He was an intellectual who detested competitive team sports. Not bad for a "wimp," wouldn't you say? I won't be returning to this website. If you have a comment to make to me, e-mail me. I did fill in "Email Address."

On second thought, don't e-mail me. There's really nothing more to say. When you tell nerds who have been (or were) bullied by jocks in school that the reason they don't like jocks is because they envy them, you're rubbing salt into their wounds.
